XD95055 1942 UFA GERMAN NEWSREEL RUSSIAN FRONT ROYAL HUNGARIAN ARMY CAUCUS OIL FIELDS SEIZED

This UFA newsreel is believed to date to summer of 1942. It is presented in Spanish, presumably so that it could be shown to supporters of Germany in Fascist era Franco Spain. Highlights include: the funeral of a Hungarian deputy regent who died fighting on the Russian Front, a pilgrimage in Croatia, sporting events including an international swimming championship in Copenhagen, a canoe tournament in Bohemia and Moravia, an art exhibition organized by the German army, the departure of Vichy French volunteers to fight on the front, and battles and military advances in the Caucasus region, focusing on German and Romanian troops against Soviet forces. (Marked 575).

• 0:22-0:27: Deputy Regent Stephan / István Horthy died heroically in the fight against Bolshevism. The Royal Hungarian Army was a major ally of Germany on the Eastern Front during World War II.

Vitéz István Horthy de Nagybánya was Hungarian regent Admiral Miklós Horthy’s eldest son, a politician, and, during World War II, a fighter pilot.

• 0:58-1:05: Funeral ceremony held in the dome hall of the Hungarian Parliament in Budapest.

• 1:13-1:22: German and Italian foreign ministers attended the ceremony.

• 2:03-2:24: Pilgrimage to Santa Maria in Bistrica, Croatia, where peasants express their worries and implore the Virgin for grace.

• 3:05-3:16: International swimming championship in Copenhagen; Sweden won against Denmark with a score of 80 to 74.

• 3:49-3:53: Dane Thomas Christiansen won the high jump.

• 4:06-4:13: Canoe tournament in the protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia.

• 4:49-5:02: Art exhibition Krieg und Kunst at the Biennale of Art, organized by the German army’s high command. This was an exhibit of works of art from Axis countries sponsored by the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht held at the Künstlerhaus in Vienna, Austria in 1942.

• 6:09-6:23: Portrait of Marshal Rommel; French volunteers in the Legion of French Volunteers Against Bolshevism leave Paris to fight on the front.

• 7:12-7:43: Battle for the conquest of the Caucasus and Rostov; German and Romanian battalions advance.

• 8:03-8:19: Romanian troops fight ambushes; another head of water is established and expanded.

• 9:13-9:29: German soldiers storm through the Caucasus, fighting in the northern gorges. Shown with captured flag of Stalin.

• 10:28-10:44: City of Maob — probably Maykop — an oil center in the northern Caucasus, is captured. German forces captured parts of the Caucasus oil fields, most notably the Maikop oilfields, in August 1942 as part of Operation Blue.

• 11:00-11:20: Bolsheviks defend valuable oil sources; fighting continues into the night.

• 12:03-12:28: Despite Soviet resistance, the advance continues southward in the Caucasus.
