XD91115 1941 UFA WORLD WAR II GERMAN NEWSREEL OPERATION BARBAROSSA MARSHALL PÉTAIN (SPANISH)

This German UFA newsreel was dubbed in Spanish so that it could be shown in Franco-era fascist Spain. This episode covers various events including the Wehrmacht’s continued offensive deep inside Soviet Russia, collaborationist Marshal Pétain’s activities, and more. Some of the episode appears to date to 1941, but other portions may be from 1942 or even later (as there is a splice or two in the film print).

• 0:23: German girls visit a Berlin hospital / lazaretto (quarantine station) and speak with German soldiers.

• 1:08: Barcelona celebrates the 449th anniversary of the discovery of America.

• 1:57: Marshal Pétain inspects the south of France. Pétain was head of the collaborationist regime of Vichy France, from 1940 to 1944

• 2:32: Enthusiastic reception in Lyon.

• 3:07: General government celebrates a typical harvest festival.

• 3:49: Awards presented in Berlin for the Venice Biennial.

• 5:01: Visit to a German factory for war material, including Panzer tanks.

• 6:00: German defense of the Channel coast is prepared.

• 6:30: Anti-aircraft battery fires and forces enemy retreat.

• 7:00: Fishing resumes in Lake Ilmen.

• 7:37: Distribution of winter clothing in a German warehouse.

• 8:01: Importance of the port of Mariupol for transshipment.

• 8:18: Petrovsky steel factory’s role in the war effort.

• 8:33: German mountain hunters march through Stalino.

• 9:27: German infantry continues its march towards Soviet territory.

• 10:29: Kaliningrad and the drive towards Moscow. German units cross the Volga. N.B.: German troops reached the western bank of the Volga River on the night of August 23, 1942, during the Battle of Stalingrad.

• 11:01: Poor condition of Soviet roads, deep mud!

• 11:40: German fighter planes attack Soviet troop concentrations.

• 12:05: Bombing of Soviet transport trains by Dorniers.
