This incredible film appears to be home movie footage, shot by an unknown American during the invasion of the Philippines in 1944. The film begins with a shot of a cave by the sea, and shots of American aircraft including transport planes and fighters, including P-38 Lightning’s flying overhead (1:00). An air raid drill is shown with men running into a bunker. At 1:13, a hapless G.I. sits on the latrine during the air raid and is forced to run for cover as Japanese bombs begin to fall at 1:47. At 2:40, shelling or bomb blasts are seen in what appears to be real footage of an air raid or artillery attack. At 3:30, the G.I. returns to the latrine to finish his business. At 3:52, an anti-aircraft gun is shown employed against the Japanese. At 4:27 the fuselage of a wrecked Japanese airplane is seen. At 4:56, the rugged coastline near Leyte is shown with invasion fleet ships offshore. At 6:40, Filipinos who live in a village on the coast are shown, including a child who puts on a shirt for the cameraman. At 7:13, a convoy of American trucks and jeeps moves on a jungle road. At 7:26, Filipino children play in a watering hole and pose for the camera at 7:36. At 7:56, a water buffalo moves through a swampy area. At 8:23, a child rides a water buffalo down the street of a village. At 8:54, villagers are shown doing the laundry with long wooden poles to pound rice. At 9:00 a woman poses for the camera. At 9:39, villagers are shown working on a bamboo house and harvesting coconuts. At 10:30 a group of villagers, perhaps including some Muslims, parades past the camera. At 10:43, two women pose with long wooden poles used to pound rice. At 11:00, rice is processed or threshed. At 11:48, the wreckage of an aircraft is shown. At 12:11, G.I.s and sailors are shown in a Filipino village inspecting fruit. At 13:00, a supply convoy of trucks and a DUKW moves up a dirt road, followed by shots of a water buffalo heard. At 13:37, a field is plowed using a water buffalo as a tractor. At 14:09, a Filipino shop is shown with traditional pottery and other items. At 14:42, a transport or cargo ship is shown at anchor off the coast, through a palm tree. At 15:30, Americans sunbathe in the nude on the beach. At 17:05, two men are shown having a picnic in the jungle. At 18:08, troops including possibly some Australians are shown engaged in heavy betting on what appears to be a dice game. This is followed by footage of a cock fight, with many dozens of men watching from inside a large, two-story arena. Other competitors are shown outside at 19:22. At 20:20, birds are shown viciously attacking one another. At 20:40, a small harbor is seen with local canoes and boats at anchor. At 21:09, another cock fight is shown. At 21:22, the footage is reversed, a sign says “pick up” and some local women are shown waiting at the sign. At 21:27, a street in a small town is shown, outskirts of Manila. A sign reads “Leyte Provincial Jail”. This was located in Tacloban. At 22:07, the Leyte Provincial Capitol Building is shown. This was the seat of government of the Philippine province of Leyte until 2019. The historic building situated in Tacloban also served as the temporary national capitol in 1944 to 1945 during the World War II era. At 22:54, large wads of cash are displayed at another dice, craps or gambling game. At 23:20, a Filipino woman and her daughter pose for the camera. At 23:25, a public market is shown. At 23:36, a group of Dodge trucks and command cars rumble past. At 23:47, a man poses next to traditional Phillipines boats. At 23:53, the Palo Church is shown. At 24:31, a Filipino girl poses in the river, where she is washing clothes. At 24:45, two Filipino women pose for the camera. At 25:26, aircraft nose art is shown. The first plane is the B-24 Bettinka followed by the Lil Judith Ann, a B-24 that was part of the 307th Bombardment Group. The Wild Irish Rose and China Doll, with nude women nose art, are also shown. At 26:04 the B-24 Dragon Lady is shown, as well as the Red Headed Woman, Lady Luck, Iron Bird, My Ideal aka Louise, At 26:56, B-24 engines are shown undergoing maintenance. At 27:06 the B-24 Liberator Gus Jokers aircraft is shown. At 27:16, the Tail Wind is shown. At 27:32, a member of the ground crew paints a bomb insignia on an airplane, signifying another successful bombing run. The Mask-A-Raider airplane is shown, with crew assembling to fly a mission. At 28:40, caves are shown on the shore of Leyte. At 29:30, a woman poses by a cave, while her friend rests in the background. At 29:47, two youths who are carrying spears to spear fish. At 30:15 a fisherman’s hut is shown. At 30:58, rows of Navy F4U Corsairs sit on a runway as well as a C-47 Skytrain. At 31:15 the My Ideal is shown again. At 31:27, a B-24 Liberator takes off from a runway strip. At 31:33, the Lady Bourbon is shown followed by Lady Luck. At 31:57, a wrecked B-24 is shown. At 32:14, the sign “Red Raiders” is visible painted on the side of the plane. This indicates it was part of the 22nd Bombardment Group, Heavy. At 32:24, additional wrecked planes and parts planes are shown. At 32:50, an F4U Corsair taxis past the camera and the pilot poses. At 33:11, Corsairs fly overhead at close range. At 33:26, a B-26 Marauder flies past on takeoff. At 33:41, a Corsair comes in for a landing with a belly gas tank. At 33:53 the Lil Jo Toddy II is shown. At 33:53, the Butch B-24 Liberator is shown. At 33:58 a 1000 pound bomb is moved into position. At 34:18 a Jeep marked Red Cross Navy Air Base Samar is shown. At 34:27, a C-47 Skytrain comes in for a landing followed by a Corsair, possibly its escort. At 35:30, a Grumman F6F Hellcat takes off from the air base. At 35:10, a lot of Navy planes sit at the airbase in neat rows. Additional planes are shown landing including a TBM Avenger and a Douglas C-54 Skymaster. At 37:19, more WWII nose art including the Streamliner, another shot of the Red Headed Woman, the Four Fan Family. At 37:43, another shot of a cave on a beach. At 38:10, a man uses a small movie camera to film the cameraman. At 38:00, soldiers exit a cave entrance. At 38:24, a native village is shown. At 38:44, the man with the movie camera drives past in a jeep. At 38:50, a group of men marches and salutes in a ceremony. At 39:05, the men are decorated while a Navy cameraman snaps photos. The unit marches past a review stand. At 40:55, a large target range is shown. At 41:13, target practice. At 41:53, men play pool and pingpong inside a shack which has a sign saying “Recreation Hut” 42:12. At 42:45, men make some food (?) while at R&R. At 42:56, a boiling pot of soup is shown. At 43:00, a soldier shoulders his weapon in drill for the camera. At 43:12, men pose for the camera with their shirts off, one wears a wife beater. At 43:16, a group of military personnel squat on the ground, and one moons for the cameraman. At 43:24, the U.S. flag is hoisted while men stand at attention. At 43:56, a sign reads Sixty First U.S. Naval Construction Battalion, and indicates Leyte and Samar are the most recent locations they’ve been posted. At 44:35, the C.O.’s office Commander B.M. Bowker and Lt. Commander H.Koopman. At 44:49, the base post office. At 45:07 a primitive church is shown, the “Chapel of the Good Samaritan”. The internet indicates this was designed by Harry Schmer, member of the CBs, and built with Filipino labor. At 45:53, a theater is shown. At 46:45, a chow line is shown as well as serving of lunch or dinner, and shots of the mess hall. At 47:08, aluminum or steel trays are scrubbed clean. The film ends with shots of maintenance areas and shops, and heavy equipment including a tractor.
