Pyramid Films, “The Bolero”, “Zubin Mehta and the Los Angeles Philharmonic”, 1973
“The first section of the film focuses on orchestra members to get to know them as people. They talk of the impact of music on their everyday life (‘It does get to you–beautiful music’), and of the problems encountered in playing ‘Bolero.’ The human side is empasized early in the film with (Los Angeles Philharmonic) conductor Zubin Mehta’s response to a question about doing the ‘Bolero’ again. ‘After tonight, I never want to look at the film, the actual performance of Ravel’s ‘Bolero.’ We watch the musicians we now ‘know’– and near the conclusion we see Mehta singing and smiling as he directs the orchestra, hair flying, his whole body moving with the music.”
