“Railroad to the Stars, traces the background and justification of the VLA telescope now under construction at a remote site in New Mexico. The movie begins by recalling the struggles of Galileo to see the Universe more clearly in spite of the obstacles placed in his way by those around him. The narration then jumps directly to Karl Janskey leaving the viewer with the impression that the inventor of the radio telescope somehow faced the same opposition as did Galileo. The narration then proceeds through a discussion of what radio astronomy does and why it is necessary to build ever larger antennas. The last couple of minutes are devoted to a description of the VLA. Unfortunately, the photography suffers from a serious limitation– at the time the move was made, none of the work of the VLA was completed, so the filmmakers were forced to film artists’ conceptions of the telescope. These sketches were inadequate to portray the vast scale of this project”
