“Coal-oil mixtures (COM) have received increasing interest as alternatives to residual fuel oil and natural gas for heavy industrial and utility applications. Future industry efforts extend beyond the scope of promoting immediate acceptance of COM. This thrust includes beneficiation of coal feedstocks used, as well as removing the oil and perfecting coal-water slurries. These efforts are discussed in addition to the four basic approaches to the manufacture of COM. Economics and details of industrial conversion are covered. CoaLiquid, Inc. (CLI) of Louisville, KY, which uses ultrasonic emulsification to stabilize COM, has been a pioneer in commercial demonstration of industrial equipment. Some of these demonstrations are described, along with implications for future applications of coal slurry fuels.”
“The McDonnell Douglas Corporation, a leader in the aerospace industry, said it was exercising an option to acquire a controlling interest in Coaliquid Inc. of Louisville, Ky., a maker of a fuel for power plants that could save industrial consumers about 10 percent on their fuel bills.”
