This film “Twenty-Four Hours in Berlin” traces one day in Berlin, during a time when the city was still divided into West and East Berlin. The final Cold War checkpoint was removed over a decade after this film was made, in 1990.

The film begins in the early morning hours as city dwellers arise for work. The sun over row homes (:19). A boat wades to harbor docks (:31). City busses advertise a local furniture store, Mobel Hubner (1:02) and a bar advertises Barenbier (2:18). Street sweepers push brush and soot over sidewalks (2:39). A local enters the Parish church of St. Ansgar in the Hansaviertel district (2:43). The view moves over Town Hall and the clock (2:56). Locals prop up their vendor stalls (3:01). A train conductor rolls down the rails (3:12). The golden Berlin Victory Tower stands at the end of Main Street (3:50). City employees head for work (4:47). Students make for class (4:59). A dog trots with the morning newspaper stuck in its jaw (5:11). The narrator announces himself as a Canadian who had immigrated to Berlin following the close of the Second World War (5:33). The modern architecture of the Berlin’s Youth Hostel follows (5:49). Travelers exit the Berlin Schonefeld Airport (5:58) carting thick luggage. Scenes follow from within the airport terminal floor (6:18). Trash collectors cart their loads to the truck (7:00). Molten slag is emptied into a rail car (7:16). The Technical University of Berlin (7:23) appears in the center of an aerial shot of the city. Freie University (7:43) was founded in West Berlin in 1948. Riders bounce past the Berlin riding school on horseback (7:46). The Berliner sightseeing bus tours the city (8:29). Yellow 1960’s Volkswagen busses peel out (9:26). Carrier pigeons (10:03) flitter about in their cages. Construction workers appear before the Berlin skyline (10:18). A street performer plays a hand organ (10:49). Areas of industry are explored (11:16). A second hand outdoor market appears (12:30). The luxury Hilton Hotel in West Berlin appears (12:57). Sunbathers enjoy Strandbad Wannsee (14:19). Berliners’ toss cards and smoke (14:58). An artist works within his studio (15:08). The German army marches (15:26). Berlin’s highest state court; the Kammergericht (15:43) follows. British troops march on guard at the Soviet War Memorial (15:50) in Tiergarten. A car drives up to an Allied checkpoint (16:11). The Glienicke bridge runs over the Havel River (16:25). Graffiti runs over the wall (16:42). Sightseers enter the Academy of Arts (17:22). Notable Austrian conductor, Herbert von Karajan (17:48) meets with the German orchestra leader, Wolfgang Stresemann. A steamer moves through the Spree River (18:00). Craftsmen work at a colorful stained glass and mosaic factory (19:35). Lush blossoms erupt in Berlin-Dahlem Botanical Garden (19:52). A fat seals yells for treats (20:48). A four o clock clipper buzzes off for New York (21:27). Artists set up at the outdoor market (21:42). Rembrandt paintings (22:00) and the 3,300 year old bust of Nefertiti are housed in the National Gallery (22:17). The Roon-Denkmal statue (22:36) follows. The Berlin Victory Tower is zoomed in on (22:55). The Maria Regina Martyrum (23:24) honors the victims of Nazi Germany. Horse and rider leap over double oxers (24:17) during Olympic qualifications. The Deutschlandhalle arena (24:55); initially inaugurated by Hitler in 1935, has since been demolished in 2011. Bellevue Palace (26:11) and Benjamin Franklin Congress Hall are toured (26:38). Rush hour jam ups the streets (27:11). A steam train (28:18) delivers workers into the city. An intricate set appears (28:59) for television broadcasting. Schiller Theaters’ hazy lights buzz (30:11). Actors perform a play on stage (30:24). Movie fans purchase tickets for the Zoo Palast Theater (30:34). A building of the German radio and TV producing company; Telefunken (31:03) follows. Neon’s advertise foreign food restaurants (32:07). Performers of the Anglo American My Fair Lady twirl on stage (32:33). Unter den linden (32:50) appears in the night. Newspaper workers close up shop for the evening (33:49). A rock band swings at a night club (33:55). The Berlin police zip in (35:14). Milk supplies roll through a checkpoint (35:58).
