This 1933 travelogue in the “Vagabond Adventure Series” takes viewers to Cuba. Cuban life and culture are displayed as the tour travels to Havana, Matanzas, Trinidad and other notable cities. Presented by RKO Pictures (:36) and Van Beuren Corporation (:36), primarily known as a NYC based animation studio. Van Beuren produced theatrical cartoons and live action shorts from the 1920’s. Alois Havrilla (:47); the radio announcer and singer, narrates. Travelers view the harbor of Havana aboard their ocean liner (1:07). Cubans and tourists stand at the popular Havana bar known as Sloppy Joes (1:17). The Presidential Palace; the Museo de la Revolucion is pictured (1:22) in Old Havana. The group moves up the Paseo del Prado (1:27). This road divides Centro Habana and Old Havana. The stunning architecture of the columned El Capitolio (1:34) appears. Cubans move down its stone staircase around the former president, Gerardo Machado (1:43). He is filmed as he exits the capital for the final time. From here, he took an armored car to the airport where he would be flown permanently into exile. A view is captured from the Prado moving away from the capital (1:59). They pass clubs and hotels (2:02) as they head for Morro Castle (2:11). A statue stands erect near the Malecon honoring General Maceo (2:17). The roads are lined with well-manicured foliage (2:27). The gorgeous La Playa Beach Bathhouse is pictured (2:35). The beaches are littered with summer vacationers (2:38). Both the yacht club and the military club are pictured in the background. The narrator heads for Sans Souci Cabaret (3:03). This was set within a natural environment and hosted nightly floor shows for entertainment. Cuban music twirls out inviting guest to dance the Rhumba (3:17). A Cuban couple dance expertly in ruffled dress as a band blows (3:28). Patrons under white hats line a long bar (3:56). The car rolls by a hut in the Cuban tropical countryside (4:14). The trip heads for Matanzas; a city known for its poets, it’s culture and folklore. It is mentioned that sugar is a major export here (4:26). Cuban children stand in a field (4:31) near the sisal plant used for making rope. Royal palm spring up all over the ground (4:57). They stop in Trinidad; a small town on the coast (5:05). A small church is pictured (5:21). Locals arrive on horseback (5:22) to discuss politics. Young Cubans walk across the cobblestone street (5:35). Skilled horsemen deliver a show for pedestrians (5:41). The architecture of Camaguey is pictured in stony black and white (6:07). A café sits to the bottom right of the screen as the town’s major industries are discussed (6:13). A ground view captures Cuban shops and restaurants (6:18). Popular food products are the guava jelly and Camaguey cheese (6:21). Cuban citizens fill the open air market (6:32). Our Lady of Candelaria Cathedral is pictured (6:38) in Spanish architecture. The Caridad del Cobre is filmed within the cathedral (6:53). Hotel Camaguey (7:02) hides behind palms. This was once a cavalry barracks. Guests shoot pool (7:09). A young girl sits within a jar that was once used to store water (7:13). Two Cuban women sit atop an old Spanish cannon (7:23). A small family enjoys a private garden (7:42). A farmer arrives in a white suit on horseback (7:52). Cattle move over pasture lands (7:56). A Cuban cowboy removes his hat (8:04). A train (8:19) moves for the Atlantic shore and Nuevitas (8:24). The city and coastline are pictured (8:30). Massive mango trees (8:38) grow throughout the island. Young Cuban girls stand under the honeyberry tree (8:46). Two wealthy women are pictured; it is mentioned one is heiress to 11 million (8:59). The streets of Santiago (9:16) are viewed from the tourists vehicle. Horse and buggy move by (9:23). A trolley car zips by (9:35). The Cathedral of Our Lady of Assumption is pictured (9:38). The Bacardi Rum distillery (9:50) was another popular tourist attraction until Bacardi left the country in the 1960’s. Workers stack large supply of the rum for sale (10:02). Delivery trucks stand at the ready (10:11). Women lounge on rocking chairs in the afternoon (10:25). Two Cuban men in white peer over the city’s expanse (10:32). Boats bob in the waters of Santiago harbor (10:37).
