XD82645 1930s BINNEY FAMILY HOME MOVIES LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA YOUNG KIDS AT PLAY

These late 1930s home movies come from the estate of Albert A. Binney, Sr. a long-time resident of Montecito and Los Angeles, California. In 1930, Binney co-founded Binney, Chase & Van Horne, a successful insurance business that was still in operation through 2018. These home movies show various family activities but the locations and people in them are unknown. Apparently the family was fairly affluent (just to afford home movies required a certain amount of largesse) and based on their clothes and lifestyle, one can assume they were not a typical American family from the period which, of course, is considered part of the Depression.

This film shows the family with a focus on the activities of the young children. You will also see their beautiful Tudor style home, which was equipped with a long driveway and a private tennis court (3:43). At (12:06) a blimp is visible in the distance. At (13:37) the boy is shown riding his toy fire engine and at (14:16) on his tricycle. We suspect this footage is from Pasadena but don’t know for sure.

The portion at 1:25, which has noticeable vertical lines evident, was actually shot with Kodacolor film. This was an early color stock that relied on lenticular reproduction of the color by using a special red green and blue filter; here it appears in black and white.

The Binney Family lived at the following addresses: 2180 West 21st Street, Los Angeles, 208 West 8th Street, Los Angeles, 150 North Van Ness, Los Angeles, and 1017 North Las Palmas, Hollywood, California.
