XD80845b “SUNNY SPLENDOR” 1931 TRAVELOGUE GEISHA HAIR & MAKE-UP, SHRINE IN VILLAGE OF NIKKO, JAPAN

This 1931 travelogue is one of a series of “Port O’ Call” films. This one “Sunny Splendor” looks at some Japanese practices as well as an attraction in the village of Nikko. It begins with a woman having her hair prepared very elaborately by a hairdresser. This is followed by close up footage of Geisha as well as them dancing. Finally, there is a visit to the Tokugawa Ieyasu Shrine in the village of Nikko, with footage of some of the parts of the shrine.

The shrine is a magnificent memorial to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, which ruled Japan for over 250 years until 1868. Ieyasu is enshrined at Toshogu as the deity Tosho Daigongen, “Great Deity of the East Shining Light”.
