XD80695 “ PATROL AND TROOP HIKING ” 1948 BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA HIKE PREPAREDNESS TRAINING FILM

This 1948 instructional film produced by the Boy Scouts of America covers some of the basics of hiking. The film makes it clear at the beginning and the end that this only serves as an introduction and should be supplemented with further instruction. The film begins with an example of two different Scout Masters, one who is badly prepared and another who is diligent in planning, to highlight the importance of planning for any hike. This is followed by what to wear and bring for a hike, including the importance of conducting practice hikes before undertaking longer journeys. In the last part of the film, the different groups are in a competition to get to a pre-determined place as fast as possible through different navigation clues. They make camp at this location and demonstrate different methods for outdor cooking.
