XD80514a ” SPORT THRILLS OF THE YEAR 1948 ” CASTLE FILMS SPORTS NEWSREEL V OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES

This 1949 newsreel film, presented by Castle Films is a compilation of sports highlights from 1948. It features footage from some of the biggest sports events of the year, including the 1948 Summer Olympics held in London, England and the 1948 Winter Olympics which took place in St. Moritz, Switzerland. The Olympics games made a historic resumption that year after enduring a long hiatus due to the outbreak of World War II. In addition to footage of the two Olympics, the newsreel contains footage of a water ski championship, the Army-Navy football game, the U.S. basketball Olympic Trials, the storied Millrose Games, horse racing, boxing, and hockey.

Castle Films was a film company founded in California by Eugene W. Castle in 1937. In 1947, United World Films, Inc., a subsidiary of Universal Pictures purchased a majority stake in Castle Films. Castle Films produced a series of newsreels entitled “News Parade.”

(02:45) In the finals of the U.S. basketball Olympic Trials, the Phillips Oilers beat the University of Kentucky.

(03:35) American middle-distance runner Gil Dodds won his third Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games with a time of 4:05.3, breaking the world indoor record.

(03:48) Runners race around the indoor track. The Millrose Games took place in Madison Square Garden from 1914 to 2011.

(04:25) The N.Y. Rangers faced off against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

(05:17) At the time, hockey players did not wear helmets.

(05:42) The horse “Adaptable” won the United Hunt steeplechase at Belmont Park in New York, bringing home a prize money of $11,000.

(05:52) The steeplechase is an equestrian event where riders and their horses surmount obstacles such as hurdles.

(06:46) Marcel Cerdan beat Tony Zale in the 11th round of the middleweight boxing championships. Zale was the defending champion but the French boxer delivered a decisive left hook at the end of the 11th round that won the match.

(08:29) At the 1948 Winter Olympics in Switzerland, the Norwegians swept the ski jumping event.

(09:51) The 1948 Summer Olympics were held at Wembley Stadium in London after a 12-year hiatus due to World War II.

(10:44) The United States brought home gold in the 4×100 meter relay.
