This 1965 film “Your City Government” was distributed by Film Associates (:09). It highlights the city government in Torrance, California following an elected representative as he explains to viewers the duties of a city government, and how the city government makes life better for all residents. A Waterman Production (:25). The film opens with a bird’s eye view overlooking a busy city from a mountains edge (:36). A local drug store sits on the corner of a busy city intersection (:42). A young boy and dog stand next to a construction sign one of the many important things a government must regulate (:45). The city government is responsible for road repairs (:48). Other signs such as those at a park inform guests to keep their pets on leashes (1:06). The narrator pulls up in front of Torrance City Hall (1:21). A police patrol car rolls away in the distance; another part of government (1:39). Another officer sprints from the station to his motorcycle (1:47). The city government is also responsible for providing protection and safety for the town’s residences. Screaming fire trucks and ambulances head for the scene of a crime (2:00). The trash collector collects resident’s waste regularly (2:00). Keeping the streets clean is also a responsibility of the city government as the street sweepers move over pavement (2:10). The public library is another facet (2:33). Youth play in the water at a water park (2:44). People of the city directly elect their own representatives (3:02). The narrator is pictured campaigning city residents during the campaign process (3:16). Residents head to vote on Election Day (3:29). One man settles into a private booth to make his selection (3:41). Eric; the narrator, wins the election for city council member (3:59). A council meeting follows (4:25) with the heads of city departments (4:28) including the city attorney (4:31) and the city clerk (4:35). News reporters also deliver up to date reports on these meetings in order to keep the community informed (4:43). A cartoon is presented to show how city government works (5:00). A speed limit sign is installed (6:02) in a residential area. A local man asks a city council member to set a law into place (6:20). Many equestrian stables and riding horses are stalled near the local man’s residence (6:25). As the city’s population grew, some residents wanted a law passed which would keep home owners from keeping horses in the city (6:42). A community member approaches the stand to voice her opinions (6:49). Debate ensues between councilmen (7:08), though a majority vote would push the law into reality (7:12). Mayor Mayor Albert Isen is also visible. The next images are from within a city courtroom of Judge Otto B. Willett (7:22) The city courts are also a part of the city government. The relevance in participating in local law and paying taxes are addressed (7:44). A system of balances and checks exists within government (8:25). The mayor meets with department heads of the city government (8:36). White lines are sprayed onto the ground to designate traffic regulations (9:12). The film wraps up as a young boy runs and plays with his dog (9:41).
