XD79825 1942 GERMAN UFA NEWSREEL POPE PIUS X BATTLE OF HONG KONG LUFTWAFFE VS. ROYAL AIR FORCE

Dating to mid-to-early 1942, this UFA German newsreel was dubbed in Spanish so that it could be shown to audiences in Fascist era Franco Spain. It shows various events, including the state funeral for Denmark’s Thorvald Stauning, the Japanese assault on Hong Kong (Dec 8, 1941 – Dec 25, 1941) and events in German-controlled Vichy France.

• 0:21: Danish state minister Thorvald Stauning died (3 May 1942).

• 0:30: Numerous delegations and friends arrived in Copenhagen to pay posthumous honors.

• 1:20: Pope Pius X gave his Urbi et Orbi blessing from St. Peter’s Basilica on his 25th episcopal jubilee.

• 1:56: A solemn musical ceremony took place in Rome for the 100th anniversary of the Cologne Cathedral, with many singers participating. A special concert takes place in an enormous concert hall.

• 3:36: A popular festival in Alcoy honors Saint George, symbolizing the medieval struggles between Moors and Christians.

• 4:29: Bicycle taxis in Paris held their second race, attracting a large public.

• 5:18: An exhibition of works by German sculptor Professor Arno Breker drew attention in Paris. an The exhibition was at L’Orangerie. Breker, a German sculptor who studied in France, became an official artist of the Third Reich. Breker’s works were endorsed by the authorities as the antithesis of degenerate art. He was made official state sculptor, and exempted from military service.

• 6:33: In Berlin, German workers and farmers were awarded the first class War Cross of Merit in a ceremony attended by high-ranking officials including Hermann Göring.

• 8:06: King Michael of Romania visited the Central School of Anti-aircraft training.

• 9:11: A German anti-aircraft battery on the Channel coast engaged a formation of British aircraft.

• 10:03: Several enemy planes were shot down by Focke-Wulf Fw 190 fighters.

• 11:29: An English aviator parachuted after his plane was shot down.

• 12:00: Original photographs from East Asia showed the conquest of Hong Kong by Japanese forces.

• 13:29: After the British governor declined the Japanese surrender proposal, the Japanese launched an attack on Hong Kong.

• 15:00: The Japanese expanded their landing point under cover of smoke clouds, leading to the unconditional surrender of Hong Kong a few days later.
