XD72444b COLUMBIA 23 / T-23 SAILBOAT PROMOTIONAL FILM TRAILERABLE SAILING

This promotional film for the “Columbia 23” or T-23 sailboat dates to the 1970s, and emphasises the fact that the design is easily trailered — in fact, the film calls this type of sailing “trailer sailing”. “Anywhere your car can make it, the Columbia 23 is sure to follow, ” states the narrator. “We call this feature-filled, quality built yacht the long-distance trailer sailboat.” With its streamlined, double-hull construction, the Columbia 23 was considered a breakthrough in trailer boat design. It was designed by Australia’s Alan Payne and produced by Columbia Yachts in the USA from 1973-77. Over 400 were built in that time period, and the molds were re-used to build many other boats. The T-23 also inspired a number of copies. The T-23 was built out of fiberglass with an aluminum mast and teak wood trim, over 800 pounds of lead ballast, and featured an outboard for marina operations. It has a full keel, masthead sloop rig, a raked stem, a reverse transom, a transom-hung rudder controlled by a tiller and a fixed shoal draft fin keel.
