XD72164 ” ROAD TO ADVENTURE U.S.A.” 1960s ROAD TRIP THROUGH UTAH’S CANYONLANDS NATIONAL PARK

In 1961, Edward Collier organized the “Magic Circle” auto-tour, which started in Richmond, Virginia. The production company Theatre of Life made this 1960’s travelog film “Road To Adventure, USA” which was originally distributed by Paramount. The film takes viewers on a journey through Utah’s Canyonlands and follows a couple as they explore various points of interest within the national park. Along the way, the film showcases the campgrounds where the couple and other campers stay, offering a glimpse into the camping experience.

The film opens with a panoramic view of the state of Utah (0:20), and shortly afterwards, it displays clips of the Canyonlands National Park (0:25-0:48). At (1:38), the film shows a piece of paper with the words “Discover America” written on it and an arrow resembling the US flag. At (2:28), a trailhead with a map of the Canyonlands, Needles District, is shown. The couple the film follows can be seen driving a 1965 Ford Mustang at (3:27), while children play with a toy bow and arrow (4:03). The Camper’s license plate is shown, with Virginia 1965 written on top (4:33). Then, at (6:15), the couple is shown with a group on a speedboat touring the Colorado River. The film shows dinosaur footprints at (6:36), followed by wall paintings created by ancient Anasazi Native Americans at (7:59). A park four-wheel drive International Scout is showcased at (8:44), and professional guide and driver Mitch Williams takes the couple through the canyon. The film ends at (15:44).

Canyonlands National Park in southeastern Utah is known for its dramatic desert landscape carved by the Colorado River. Island in the Sky is a huge, flat-topped mesa with panoramic overlooks. Other notable areas include the towering rock pinnacles known as the Needles, the remote canyons of the Maze and the Native American rock paintings in Horseshoe Canyon. Whitewater rapids flow through Cataract Canyon.
