This short film, one of the “Milestones of the Century” series, is entitled “Heritage of the Hudson River”. It begins with aerial shots of lower Manhattan / New York City and the Hudson (:34). At (:55) a tugboat is shown cruising past the Statue of Liberty across New York Harbor. At (1:11), trans-Atlantic ocean liners including the SS United States and HMS Queen Mary are seen at anchor. At (1:29) a Staten Island Ferry plies the river. At (1:38) an aerial shot of Grant’s Tomb and Riverside Drive as well as (1:45) the George Washington double-decked suspension bridge. At (1:57) the Little Red Lighthouse, officially Jeffrey’s Hook Light, in Fort Washington Park along the Hudson River. At (2:05) the palisades of rock on the upper river are shown. At (2:36) the United States Military Academy is shown at West Point, along with the chain that famously prevented enemy ships from moving up the river. At (2:49) the Bear Mountain bridge in the Catskill Mountains is shown. At (2:53) the railroad bridge is shown. At (3:04) the Tappan Zee bridge spanning the Hudson River between Tarrytown and Nyack. At (3:14) a discussion of the Dutch names that are still used along the Hudson, dating back to when New York was a Dutch colony.
