At 5:29, a rotary hoe is pulled across the field by a John Deere tractor, to break up the soil crust. At 5:50, the first shoots appear in the field. At 7:52, a plant breeder is shown at work, attempting an experiment to increase plant yields. At 8:45, autumn is shown with the beans brown and dry — the time for harvest has arrived. At 9:20, combines drive through the fields collecting the beans. At 9:43, the farmer’s wife appears with cold drinks and food, and then the harvest continues. At 10:00, beans rich in oil — up to 20% of their total weight — are shown being collected. At 10:35, grain silos are shown including that belonging to the Savoy Grain Co. in Tolono, Illinois. At 11:00, the narrator discusses how grain is shipped by the railroads and via the Mississippi River to destinations all over the world.
