XD65374 1928 HOME MOVIE STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK NATURAL BRIDGE, VIRGINIA WASHINGTON D.C.

This brief vintage silent film shows an unknown family’s trip to Staten Island as well as notable historic locations in Washington DC in the late 1920’s. Staten Island is the southernmost borough of the five boroughs of New York City. This film displays the attire of the late 1920’s well, as flapper type women in thick fur lined coats and simple cut dresses climb up a ladder (:10). It’s not clear exactly what’s going on here, but it appears everyone is goofing off and having fun for the camera. Possibly this was an anniversary party for one of the couples? The camera pans over to the men, who are all wearing suits (:21). Tight fitting hats are pressed upon the women’s heads with flapper girl like dresses (:34). A black Ford model T sits in the background (:40). Gleeful men and women dance about in excitement for the trip (:52). The camera pans over the faces of the vacationers in trim suits with eye glasses, one puts a clothespin over his nose (2:01). A young family of four approaches the camera (2:31). The trip appears to be beginning in the country side of New York at a farm home (3:07). Women stand for the camera beneath breezy trees and in light jackets (3:30). Fog settles around the land (4:31). Houses stand snowcapped as the film takes place in New York winter (5:13). A triage rocks on rocking chairs outside a luxurious stone lodge (5:31). The group overlooks a woodsy mountainous region (5:56). Guests in evening attire horse around in the sprawling grounds for the camera man (6:24). A man dances with his suit and kicking heels (7:18). Three guests move down stone steps in a thickly wooded area as they explore (7:59). The camera moves over a natural stone arch (8:44), this Natural Bridge is a geological formation in Rockbridge County, Virginia. The tourists move along the ground near water over a primitive stone bridge (9:00) in the Natural Bridge park. A tiny creek cuts through the ground (9:14). Women; notable dressed in bourgeoisie evening attire and heels, roam through thick spindly trees (9:46). The camera moves over the stone exterior of the vacationers lodge (10:35). An employee sweeps the steps (10:48). Women wear jackets lined with fur and an actual dead animal (11:10). The trip appears to move to Washington DC as the Washington Monument is captured in the background (11:49) and the USS Maine Mast Memorial. A solder paces guarding (12:26) the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (12:29). The group visits Mt. Vernon (13:21) as the film begins to conclude with guests sitting neat on rocking chairs.
