XD64964 “ DRUGS AND YOUR AMAZING MIND ” 1970s ANTI-DRUG USE & ABUSE EDUCATIONAL FILM

This 1970s educational film by Alfred Higgins Productions, Inc. warns of the negative effects of using non-prescription, recreational drugs, including stimulants, alcohol, hallucinogens, and marijuana. The films begins with green and red pill capsules poured out of a bottle (0:27). Narration describes amazing things about lions, horses, and birds; it says humans are amazing for their minds. A boy looks through a microscope (1:04); a rocket blasts off; jets fly in formation; a girl shoots a basketball; a boy smells and eats a piece of pizza; a girl lies on her side reading a book in the grass (2:06). An animated diagram shows chemicals acting in the brain (2:16). A mother takes a prescription pill bottle from a bedside table to give her child medicine (2:33). Medication bottles on a pharmacy shelf: Proloid (2:46), Robaxin (2:49). A female doctor writes a prescription (2:56). A pharmacist pours yellow pills out of a bottle to count (3:15); a typewriter types, “Take one pill every three hours.” A woman buys over-the-counter medicine; an Anacin is in the background (3:26). A hand taps a cigarette on an ashtray; the film blurs to show the mind-altering effects of taking non-prescription drugs (3:55). The film describes and shows effects of certain drugs: stimulants (“uppers”) like methamphetamine and cocaine (4:21); narration explains the increased heart rate and blood pressure. The film shows depressants (“downers”) like Seconal and Quaalude (5:18). A boy walks with a staggered gait. Neon signs for alcohol: beer, cocktails, liquor (6:14). Narration describes how alcohol is a depressant. A person drinks from an Olympic beer can (6:34); Miller beer cans in the center console next to a boy driving erratically; he tries to brake before hitting a tree (7:07). The film shows marijuana leaves; two people smoke a joint (7:55). The film shows effects of hallucinogens like LSD (8:33); a man tries to climb off a balcony as through he can fly. PCP (9:02); Times newspaper headlines reads “Slain Man Believed to be Under Influence of PCP.” A man tries to subdue a woman raging in a hallway from PCP effects (9:43); paramedics lift her onto a stretcher. Police search a man’s trunk for drugs and handcuff him (10:24); two people exchange drug money on a street corner. A female worker in a hairnet examines drugs manufactured in a laboratory (11:00). A home drug lab; a Tide box on a shelf (11:08). A man cuts drugs with another powdered substance in a home lab. Several young users explain why they were involved with drugs and coping strategies used now (12:08). A girl hesitates when offered a joint at a party (14:18). The interviewees offer advice on how to resist drugs. A young man takes photos with a camera in front of a Sadao Watanabe poster (16:51).
