XD60074 ”FOOTSTEPS OF THE PIONEERS” 1960 BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA RECRUITING FILM

This Boy Scouts of America film from 1960, shows two young boys, Johnny and Bucky, who join the Eagle Patrol. They participate in different exercises to learn rope-tying, prey stalking, bonfire cooking, canoeing, and emergency preparedness. Lastly, the Scouts assist local police in finding a young girl lost in the woods.

They stop and unwrap two sticks from a tarp (01:12) and continue walking with the sticks (01:28). They stop at a Boy Scouts’ campsite (01:43). They sit down on the ground (01:58). Bucky climbs a tree (02:15). He is hanging head down from a branch (02:27). The branch snaps (02:32) and Bucky falls (02:34). Boy Scouts see the accident and run to help (02:39). One of them opens a first aid kit (03:04). Bucky and Johnny take their sticks and go with the Boy Scouts to the campsite (03:30). They meet Mr. Miller, Scout Master (03:52) and Blip Martin, the patrol leader (03:58). A pot of stew is served (04:09). A match stuck in a tree log is lit, using an axe (05:25). Bucky and Johnny walk over a monkey bridge (05:32). They make fire using flint stone and steel (05:43). Bucky and Johnny walk around the Scouts’ camp (06:06). They shake Blip Martin’s hand (06:14) and then leave (06:32). Bucky and Johnny arrive at a troop meeting (06:48). Blip introduces the boys to the Scouts (07:17). Bucky and Johnny are blindfolded to play a game of “Where’s Charlie?” (07:38). They are recruited in the Eagle Troop by Mr. Miller and Blip (07:54). The boys learn how to tie ‘Tenderfoot’ knots (08:23). Bucky ties the rope incorrectly (09:09) and him and Johnny fall (09:11). Recruitment ceremony (09:20). Everyone says the Scout oath (09:36). Scouts hike through a forest (09:54). They stop and use a map and a compass to navigate (10:16) and then continue walking (10:40). They set up camp at a campsite near a body of water (11:08) where they start a bonfire (11:13). They wrap food in aluminum foil (11:31) and place it into the bonfire (11:57). They unwrap the cooked food and eat lunch (12:01). Bucky cooks a potato without tinfoil on the fire (12:08) resulting in a burned potato (12:15). Scouts are exploring the creek near their campsite (12:20). They discover animals including frogs, snakes, and turtles (12:24). The Scouts practice ‘stalking’ prey by following their friends in the woods (13:07). A deer (14:16). A boy is mixing chemicals in a laboratory (14:37). Johnny shoots arrows with a bow (14:58). Bucky performs a high jump (15:09). An owl (15:16). Scouts running through the woods (15:39). One is waving a flag (15:50). They jump over a lake using a rope swing (16:06). The Scouts arrive at a cabin (16:27). A boy wrapped in gauze bandage exits the cabin and collapses, as part of an emergency drill (16:56). The Scouts run to assist (17:04). Singing at campfire (17:27). An owl (17:53). Scouts jump into a lake from a pier (18:04). They learn how to swim and dive (18:41). Canoeing (18:52) and crafting at the handicraft lodge (19:21). One dresses as an Indian, grabs a crafted weapon and pretend-attacks another scouts (19:42). Scouts shooting rifles (19:55). Sitting around a campfire (20:13). Pretending to be Indians, they arrive at the campfire and perform with music and dance (20:22). A police car driving (21:08). The officers exit the car (21:21) and ask the Scout Leader to help find a girl lost in the woods (21:26). The leader instructs the scouts for the search (21:32) and the scouts enter the woods to find the girl (21:40). Johnny and Bucky find a girl’s shoe (22:28) and continue searching by tracking the girl’s trail (22:52). Johnny and Bucky find the girl (24:11). The scouts are walking alongside a creek (24:28) and through the forest (25:07). “The End” text overlay (25:32).
