XD52284 “ VD: A NEW FOCUS ” 1970s SEX EDUCATION FILM VENEREAL DISEASE PREVENTION

This educational film covers the topic of venereal disease, VD, focusing on gonorrhea and syphilis. James Brolin is hosting the film, produced by Directions Unlimited Film Corporation in association with American Educational Films in 1971 in Beverly Hills, California.

The film opens with an act of a young couple walking through a forest, arguing about having contracted VD due to infidelity (00:15). James Brolin introduces the subject of VD (01:17). Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs reveal that gonorrhea exited throughout their existence, and they treated it using painkillers (01:37). Columbus and his sailors, exemplified in mosaic art, were the most probable cause for syphilis reaching Europe (01:50). 18th-century paintings reveal how fashion was influenced by syphilis (02:10), such as wigs to hide hair loss (02:16) and neck clothes to cover throat sores (02:20). Henry VIII, Ivan the Terrible, and Adolf Hitler are some world leaders who were infected with syphilis (02:30). Hectic streets portray ordinary people walking through their city (02:48). James Brolin introduces a VD specialist (03:18) and the specialist explains what VD means, how it is transmitted, and how it infects men and women differently (03:28). Two boys walk beside a horse enclosure while speaking about VD (05:20). James Brolin describes the treatment of VD (05:29). Two young women are looking up gonorrhea in a dictionary (05:50), and three young men in a mechanic shop worry about having contracted VD (06:25). James Brolin encourages everyone to seek medical attention if they have concerns (07:30) at places such as hospitals, public health centers, free clinics, and private physicians for testing and treatment (08:41). James Brolin urges anyone, who have been infected, to speak to any previous sexual partners (08:55). A girl at the health department speaks about anonymously communicating the information to involved partners (09:16), followed by boy talking to his friend about being infected (09:50). James Brolin introduces the VD specialist again (10:09), and he addresses truths and misconceptions of VD, and describes the consequences of leaving VD untreated (10:31). James Brolin recognizes VD as a sensitive and private issue (11:59). Interviews of people exemplifies common misunderstanding of VD (12:09). The film closes with James Brolin making an outro (13:17).

The film was produced and directed by Noel Nosseck and written by her and Mike Rollens, photography by Tom Grubbs, and editing by Leon Kesson. It was created with consultants from The American Social Health Association and The Health Educational Division from Los Angeles County Health Department to raise awareness about VD.
