XD52114 “ COLORADO LAND OF THE LONG LOOK ” 1971 KODAK TRAVEL FILM ROCKY MOUNTAINS PIKE’S PEAK

This travelogue portrays the diverse landscapes of the state of Colorado while simultaneously promoting Kodak photography products. The film was produced by Eastman Kodak Co. in 1971 in concert with the State of Colorado Traveler and Business Bureau, and narrated by Rex Allan. An accompany book was also published at the time of the film’s release. The movie includes extensive footage of everything from snowy mountaintops to sand dunes in the desert, displaying many outdoor activities both locals and visitors can enjoy when exploring the nature of Colorado.

The film leads with a busy gas station, as an attendant is busy filling gas tanks and performing oil checks on the many cars, including a VW Beetle (00:08). Gas is .40 per gallon! A van exits the gas station (01:06) and continues on the highway (01:36). Cowboys travel by foot across the flat of the land (01:59). Families and friends on vacation (02:15). “The Rocky Mountains” mountain range (02:53). A migrating herd of sheep crosses the road (03:08). Motorcycles riders chose the adventurous path up the mountains (03:32). Close-up footage of leaves and flowers (04:28). Visitors are taking photos to remember their experiences (04:56). Birds and deers in their habitat (05:34). The San Juan National Park (07:26). The “Lizard Head” Mountain summit in the San Miguel mountains range of the Rocky Mountains (07:44). A family is horseback-riding through “The Garden of Gods” public park (08:01). Unusual tall and pointed rocks offers unique picture opportunities (08:10). Visitors stroll around the “Cliff Palace” cliff dwelling in the Mesa Verde National Park, admiring the native American city build entirely of stone in 1200 AD (08:30). An elder man is sharing a story of a shooting, that took place in his hometown (09:54). A handheld camera reenacts the scene of the shooting by replicating the footsteps and displaying the bullet holes in the windows of the timeworn storefronts, while the scene is dramatized with sound effects and music (10:53). A bird flies in the clear blue sky (12:31). A western themed saloon is authentically preserved and decorated with stuffed animal heads hanging on the walls (12:35). A man sat at a water stream is searching for gold using a metal tray (13:33). Remnants of factories and miners’ accommodation from the mining industry in Colorado is still present on the mountainsides (14:10). The process of mining in the 1970s shows use of updated technologies and power tools when subtracting and transporting the raw materials through the mineshafts to the factories (14:40). With heavy machinery and manpower, whole bars of silver are created (16:14). Cowboys ride bucking horses and bulls to compete for a silver trophy (16:20). A full audience watches the rodeo amusements (16:55). Visitors are hiking on the mountains (19:33). A hiker climbs a steep mountainside and rappels down (20:10). Two hikers glide down a snowy hill towards a lake to fish (20:42), and they cook the fish over fire (21:22). On The Green River, visitors are going on floating trips (22:09), and they row through the jagged waters in the inflatable boats (22:24). Pikes Peak is the highest peak in the Rocky Mountains (23:29). Every 4th of July race cars and old model stock cars go racing on a twisted and curves course in the mountains, and groups of families and friends celebrate the day while enjoying the show from the sidelines (23:29). During the winter, Colorado becomes an ideal skiing destination with challenges for all skiers of all ages (25:40). A mother is taking photos of her family running down the sand dunes of the Great

Sand Dunes National Park (25:56). The film is concluded with a recap of the many activities and treasures of the landscapes in Colorado (27:08).
