XD51754 “ JOGGING FOR PHYSICAL FITNESS ” 1960’S PHYSICAL EDUCATION FILM RUNNING BOOM EXERCISE

This brief film highlights the need for physical fitness in a person’s overall health and well-being, It is presented by Associated Film Services (:22). It specifically notes the benefits of jogging, and was probably made as part of the “running boom” of the late 1960s/early 1970s.

A golfer is pictured setting his clubs into his golf cart (1:34) as a jogger runs through an open park (:34). The film notes that most people live highly inactive lives as pedestrians are filmed riding up the escalator (1:13). A secretary performs her duties while sitting down all day, not ideal for overall health (1:18). As television became more popular; more folks spend time sitting down after work (1:47). A magazine displays a fitness ad (2:01) as another woman is seen jogging in the woods. Proper shoe gear is highlighted best for running (2:47). A woman goes for a long distance jog around the track (3:12). Jogging is beneficial to the body as it requires excess amounts of oxygen into the body and strengthens the cardiovascular system (3:12). A diagram of a human anatomy shows that the legs operate as a second heart (3:42) as the body moves. A young couple runs and plays on the beach (4:20). The film then notes as a woman ages, her metabolism slows down. She is then pictured weighing herself on a scale (4:47). A woman runs along the shore for exercise (4:57). An overweight person eats food on the couch while watching television (5:12). A doctor checks a man’s blood pressure (5:29) in the doctor’s office. An overweight man plays with his belly outside in the park (5:34). Back at the doctor’s office another patient has his body fat calculated in a skin fold test (5:58). A stress test is used for cardio-vascular fitness (6:09). Another good method to test one’s physical health is to test for how long one can maintain a jog before slowing to a walk (6:44). A pedestrian sits with a physical education teacher in order to develop a proper jogging program to support their health (7:19). Prior to beginning any exercise; it helps to stretch and warm up one’s muscles (7:29). A slow motion climber exercise (7:39) and a toe touch exercise are demonstrated (7:49). Another exercise conducted while on the back is to pull the knee into the chest (8:00). Proper jogging form follows (8:22). Another method in maintaining health is to get regular and thorough physical exams (9:13).

The running boom of the 1970s occurred in high- and middle-income countries. It was a ‘jogging’ movement in which running was generally limited to personal physical activity and often pursued alone for recreation and fitness. It is estimated that 25 million Americans took up some aspect of running in the 1970s and 1980s.
