Made in the 1970s by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, this film presents a study of the efficacy of motorcycle helmets, by looking at the effects of riders who wore them in an accident. It is presented by the U.S. Department of Transportation (:09). The study was conducted in the city of Los Angeles over two and a half years (:20). It was opened in order to identify the cause of motor vehicle accidents. Cyclists are filmed as they head down the roadway (:32). In the city of Los Angeles, 25,000 accidents were reported annually (:43). This study was sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (1:03). The University of Southern California Traffic Safety Center follows (1:13). Over the radio a rescue responding call is heard (1:20). USC accident investigation teams are viewed (1:27). Patrol cars from the LA county Police department respond to the accident notification (2:08). A damaged motorcycle moves off the roadway here (2:33). An injured woman is seen in a neck brace (2:34). Information from the scene is gathered (2:53). Skid lines and photographic evidence are retrieved (3:09). An officer interrogates a witness to the accident (3:29). 60% of all motorcyclists in accidents reported that they were not wearing a helmet (3:43). Professor Hugh Harry Hurt headed the USC Motorcycle Accident Research team (4:02). Riders were asked to donate lucky helmets for the study (4:30). The man in charge of helmet selection follows (6:15) presenting actual cases to show the accident situations (6:42). The damaged motorcycle from the first incident is shown (7:42) as well as the helmet (8:07). A similar case follows except the rider was not wearing a helmet (9:07) which resulted in his death. The damaged car (9:33) is viewed as well as the motorcycle with the helmet still attached to it (9:53). The line of vision a person experiences with a helmet on and off is compared (12:10). A helmetless rider moves down the highway (13:40). An accident follows with a cyclist riding with a helmet (14:15) as his motorcycle collides into the side of a car (14:39). The damaged helmet is examined (15:52). A heavy helmet (17:12) is compared to a fiber glass helmet (18:12) and a partial coverage helmet (18:25). Most accidents occur within the first hour of riding (18:47). About half of all fatal accidents involved booze (20:01).
