XD51024 “GRAND TOUR” 1970s PAN AM AIRLINES EUROPEAN TRAVEL PROMO LONDON, PARIS, FLORENCE & ROME

This elaborate 1970s film “Grand Tour” promotes Pan American World Airways. The airline takes viewers on short tours through London, Paris, Florence and Rome, with each segment featuring a different individual. Pan Am at the time was the largest international air carrier in the world. The film was created by screen writer Ann Eisner, and directed by Lee Bobker, founder of Vision Associates.

The film opens with a shot of a 747 passenger plane (Pan Am was the launch customer of the Boeing 747, placing a $525 million order for 25 in April 1966.) The traditional symbol for the airline; the globe with “Pan Am’ written across is captured on the tail. Big Ben appears at (:17). Another famed icon of London is the AEC Routemaster (:30); the brilliant red double decker bus. The first scene opens with a woman called “Alannah Tandy” discussing the style and life in London (1:19). A montage ensues of modern London streets with colorful and fashionable inhabitants moving through the streets and shops (1:35). The film turns to old London (2:20). A dairy shop; rebuilt in 1667, hangs within the narrow alley pointing to the rich history of the area (2:25). Old taverns and draft houses are pointed out such as ‘The Green Man’ and ‘French Horn’ (2:32). Restaurants and shops such as “The Shakespeare’s Head” flick by (2:43). A poster for the Regents Park Open Air Theater shows an opera and ballet in the summer 1969 (2:47). David Henry Conville presented the showings. Conville was a British actor and director at the open air theater (2:51). This theater is set in the Covent Garden district in London. Scenes from one of the showings follow (3:11). Alannah takes photographs of models for work (3:20) with famous landmarks behind them such as the Tower Bridge (3:26). She points to the link between London and fashion (3:37). Evening festivities are looked to as locals gather at a restaurant for food and refreshments (4:39). The sunset falls over the village of Harbridge as locals enjoy evening wine (5:20). The film turns to Paris as the building for Bigoudi Coiffeur sits on the bottom right screen (5:45). The Eiffel Tower appears at (5:55). The Old Stone Bridge runs over the Seine River (6:14). A couple paddles in a small boat through the city known for it’s romantic atmosphere (6:24). The man speaking is noted to be a French chef (7:06). The chefs work to prepare a filet of sole (7:21). An artist works on a painting in the streets (8:10). Locals wander towards La Bonne Franquette Café (8:30). The French typically take long lunches (8:51). Guests of another restaurant enjoy a view of the Notre Dame Cathedral (9:13). Another popular treat in Paris is the pastry shop (10:01). Tourists and locals enjoy an evening on the Grand Boulevard (10:09). Maxim’s; an evening staple, is a French classics restaurant at an Art Nouveau institution established in 1893 (10:59). The Arc de Triomphe is captured at sunset (12:03). A sculptor tells viewers of the beauty of Florence (12:24). The Ponte Vecchio (13:56) over the Arno River. Faces of stone sculptures (14:33). The Cathedral of Florence follows (15:53). Locals meander through Via de Tornabuoni (16:27); the famed shopping street. A goldsmith works on pieces of gold jewelry (16:48). The intricate work of a hand painter is zoomed in on (17:12). A leather maker’s craft is highlighted (17:49). A conductor guides a string orchestra (18:34). We go to Rome (19:45) to capture the Castel Sant’Angelo (19:49). The guide, a photographer for a newspaper, snaps photographs of a woman painting (20:18). Shots follow of a large open market (20:24). A newlywed couple gets their photographs taken with the famed Coliseum in the background (20:55). The Piazza di Spagna (21:11) follows. A traffic cop guides civilians and tourists around the area (21:27). Vacationers enjoy blue swimming pools (22:22). Locals visit the Café Doni and the Via Veneto (22:58). Evening scenes show the Trattoria (23:48). Night scenes show colorful dance clubs (24:42). A traditional two horse stage coach takes tourists through Vienna (25:02) in summer. The Parliament building (25:15). A Vienna local discusses the music in the city (25:39). A pianist plays in front of a candelabra (25:58). Tourists view statues and intricate archways (26:29). Lobmeyer glassware is highlighted (27:16) as well as Hotel Sacher (27:27). The Vienna Intercontinental Hotel is viewed (27:36).
