XD50914 “ PEACE IS OUR PROFESSION ” 1970s CULVER CITY, CALIFORNIA POLICE DEPARTMENT PROMO FILM

This 1970s film looks at the work of police officers in the Culver City Police Department in California. The film presents the daily life of Officer Bryan — his home, his family, his involvement in different cases and situations. It was produced by Sid Davis, a prolific filmmaker who spent a career making educational and social guidance films. “Peace is Our Profession” begins with a suspect being arrested (seemingly randomly) while onlookers make up their minds about the situation. This is followed by the start of the day for Officer Bryan, who takes care of his kids before heading out on patrol. The film then follows this cop on his daily routine and the duties he and his partner perform. This includes arresting shoplifters, investigating attempted burglaries and noise complaints, bringing lost children back home, arresting teens for drug possession, and investigating suspects in murder cases. The film ends with the same scene it started with and it turns out that the person being randomly searched matched the description of the suspect. The film seeks to promote a positive image of the police as guardians of peace and order in the city, while also portraying them as paternal figures.
