XD50654 1950’s “SCHLEY RIDE TO AUSTRIA PART 1” 1960s TRAVELOGUE FILM SALZBURG VIENNA

This film was created by Norman Schley, a talented filmmaker from Wisconsin who produced a series of travelogues, often under the production name “Picturelogue”. Some of his work was aired on television, other films were presented by Schley in person at club meetings and in other forums. This episode takes viewers to Austria; the land locked country in the southern portion of central Europe. The film is mostly silent, and was originally presented with Schley reading from a script.

The film opens on a group of Austrians enjoying refreshments around a red and white checkerboard table (1:06). Salzburg is the first city visited (1:13). Mirabelle Castle is pictured next to Mirabelle Garden (1:19). Hohensalzburg Fortress rises over the city (1:24). The Salzach river cuts through (2:11). Mozart and his family resided at No. 9 Getreidegasse from 1747 to 1773 (2:59). The Glockenspiel stands at the end of one of Salzburg’s narrow alley ways (3:19). The most popular shopping districts in Salzburg is the Getreidegasse (4:23). Within Herbert von Karajen square is the Horse Pond (4:26) designed and built in 1603 by Johann Bernard Fischer von Erlach. The Marionetten Theater follows (5:20); the largest and oldest continuing marionette theaters established in 1913. A man and woman inspect one of the marionette puppets (5:44). The Friedhof of Wein St. Marx is the cemetery where Mozart was buried although the exact location of his remains is unknown to this day (6:39). A monument stands here dedicated to Mozart (6:46). Schloss Hellbrunn (9:00) is a castle constructed in 1613 by Markus Sittikus von Hoehenems. Tourists and natives enjoy the Hellburnn Palace (9:21) and trick fountains constructed by Santino Solari in the 1600’s (9:31). Guests to the attraction take a guided tour (10:02). A sign guides guests to more water attractions (10:49). One of the trick fountains is set off as water jets shoot up from holes in the seat of chairs around a table (11:53). Street signs point drivers towards the Autobahn (13:02). The camera moves up for a cable car ride providing an aerial view of the countryside (13:22). The hills which are captured here were used in the popular classic ‘The Sound of Music’ which was released in 1965 (13:29). A couple enjoys picturesque views of the mountains at a local restaurant (18:37). The film turns to the city of Badgastien (19:48) as a pair rides a small rail cart. Aerial shots capture the city from above (22:16). Guests splash in one of the pools in the city as the area is known to be a popular spa and ski resort (22:27). The Badgastien Church rises in the center of the city (20:51). A stunning shot shows a water fall cutting through the mountains and running under a bridge in the center of the city (20:51). Locals splash through clear pools (22:21). Tourists take to the Berg Restaurant (24:00). Two men enjoy lunch out by a farm house (24:42). The sports club, Reitclub Gastien, is visited (25:10). A group of tourists take a boat ride through the waters (27:20). The tour moves to Vienna (27:53). The Schonbrunn Palace (30:06) opened in 1700 and was the main summer residence of the Habsburg Rulers. The Schloss Schonbrunn Zoo is looked at as a brown bear and elephant are filmed (31:08). The Viennese Stephansdom is captured (32:34); created in order to symbolize the Austrian reconstruction after the second world war. The cathedral’s intricate gothic style architecture is zoomed in on (33:17). Guests enter the front gate for a service (33:28). The main drag of Vienna; Der Graben, is lined with shops (34:04). A display case of Lobmeyer glassware follows (34:39). Lobmeyer has been in business since 1823. Some of the pieces are shown to be engraved with images (35:07). Guests head to a pastry shop for desert and coffee (35:48). A sign on one of the buildings points residents to the Diners Club; a charge card company owned by Discover and established in 1950 (36:08). Pedestrians mill about an open-air market (36:33). The Donaturm is viewed (37:09). Sailboats are pictured in the Donuakanal (37:18). A small family farm (39:14). The Belvedere Palace (40:24) was constructed in the 18th century. The film takes viewers within the palace (41:22). A conductor guides an outdoor orchestra (42:17). A small bird sits on the head of the statue on Strauss monument in Stadt Park (43:14). Night scenes at a fair (44:22).
