XD50644 “SCHLEY RIDE TO AUSTRIA PART 2” 1960s TRAVELOGUE FILM RUST INNSBRUCK LAKE CONSTANCE

This is the second portion of the “Schley Ride to Austria”. This film was created by Norman Schley, a talented filmmaker from Wisconsin who produced a series of travelogues, often under the production name “Picturelogue”. Some of his work was aired on television, other films were presented by Schley in person at club meetings and in other forums. This episode takes viewers to Austria; the land locked country in the southern portion of central Europe. The film is mostly silent, and was originally presented with Schley reading from a script.

Here, the film picks up in the city of Rust, Austria located near Hungry. A train awaits a signal for departure (:26). The Rust country side is captured as the train moves off (1:14). A young woman is pictured in traditional Austrian attire noting the many layers (1:58). A craftswoman works on a wicker basket (3:16) as another works on hand crafted pottery (4:29). Intricate designs are hand painted onto the clay once set (5:10). An orchard is watered through a primitive sprinkling system (6:50). Farmworkers pile hay in stacks on in the field (7:45). An aerial shot captures a dirt road zig zagging through the lush grounds of Rust (10:44). A stable hand walks out a cluster of white Lippizans, a bred familiar to the area (11:22). The fouls are pictured next to the mares and are black as they get older their coats will turn to a white grey (11:46). A sign for a tack store follows (12:27). Men prepare a dog for a quail hunting adventure (13:21). A couple and child ride a motor bike through the city (16:45). A 707 Austrian Airlines passenger plane (16:50) is readied for a flight. Pilot and co-pilot meet prior to loading onto the plane (16:58). Stewardesses and passengers begin to board (17:18). Inflight service is wheeled out for guests (17:50). The film turns to Graz (18:17) the capital city of the province of Styria. The Mur River is viewed between a stone fencing running through the city (18:29). A wide shot of the city follows as tourists enjoy refreshments at an outdoor restaurant (18:43). The Graz Town Hall is viewed in a wide shot of the city (18:54). The Uhrturm is a 13th century medieval clock sitting on a hilltop (19:03). The fountain is captured in the center of the town (19:22). Pedestrians window shop in the city (19:27). The Landeszeughaus Styrian Armory exhibit follows (20:07). The Graz Highlands are pictured (22:50) as a passenger train moves through the area. A rail car moves down Herrengasse; the main city drag (23:24). The tour then goes to Innsbruck (23:46) and this city’s main drag; Maria-Theresin-Strasse. The Our Lady statue rises in the center of the street (23:58). A young newlywed couple smiles for the camera (25:08). A seamstress works at a sewing machine (26:33). Stubai carving tools (27:56) are set neatly into a case. A popular restaurant here is the Goldener Adler (28:23). The Nordkette Mountain Range (28:28) stand guard over the city. The Triumphal Arch follows (28:40). The Hofburg Imperial Palace (29:22) was built in the 16th century. Tourists take ground tours of the area (29:27). Youth are filmed walking for a field trip (29:45). The Europa bridge appears at (30:01). A rapid river runs along country style homes (30:14). A man samples a beverage from two women in traditional Austrian attire (32:25). A group of young boys perform traditional dances for guests in festive attire (32:55). Handcrafted wooden masks are seen (34:32) as the travelers visit a wood making shop. A woman works on the designs for the masks outside (34:46). The tour goes to Bregenz at the eastern end of Lake Constance (36:41). The camera follows a chef preparing a full course dinner (37:41). The chef and waitress serve a pair of men at a white clothed table (40:16). Vacationers soak in the sun in sunbathing suits (41:11). The film begins to wrap up as civilians enjoy a play (43:04) and a light show afterwards (43:39). This film was a presentation of Picturelogue (44:18).
