XD50494 “SCHLEY RIDE TO HAWAII” 1960s TRAVELOGUE SAN FRANCISCO TO HONOLULU TRIP REEL 1 PART 1

This color travelogue style film from the late 1960s or early 1970s titled “Schley Ride to Hawaii” was produced by Norman E. Schley. Schley was a skilled filmmaker from Wisconsin who made a series of amateur films under the moniker “Schley Ride” or “Schley Focus Ride” through his company Picturelogue Inc. Some of his films aired on television, while others were shown in front of live audiences. This particular account, a predominantly silent film which is the first installment of a four-part series on Hawaii, takes viewers along on a trip from a San Francisco cruise terminal to the shores of Honolulu on the Hawaiian Island of O’ahu. The film opens with scenes from San Francisco before transitioning to footage from aboard the Matson Lines SS Lurline cruise ship. The majority of the film however, contains footage of historical landmarks around Honolulu, Waikiki Beach, and the hotels that began to populate the city’s shoreline. “Schley Ride to Hawaii” is historically significant for the insight it offers into the development of Hawaii, and in this case Honolulu, in the years after Hawaii officially became the 50th state of the Union in 1959.
