XD50474 “SCHLEY RIDE TO HAWAII” 1960s TRAVELOGUE TRIP TO HONOLULU AND BIG ISLAND REEL 2 PART 1

This color travelogue style film from the late 1960s or early 1970s titled “Schley Ride to Hawaii” was produced by Norman E. Schley. Schley was a skilled filmmaker from Wisconsin who made a series of films under the moniker “Schley Ride” or “Schley Focus Ride” through his company Picturelogue Inc. Some of his films aired on television, while others were shown in front of live audiences. This particular account, which is the third installment of a four-part series on Hawaii, follows Schley as he flies from Honolulu to the Big Island. The film opens with historical reenactment footage of the attack on Pearl Harbor and is followed by Schley’s home footage of the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific and the Pearl Harbor National Memorial. The majority of the film however, contains footage of historical landmarks and natural wonders from around the Big Island. This is a historically significant film for the way it portrays Pearl Harbor but also for the insight into development in the tourism sector across Hawaii in the years after the island nation officially became the 50th state of the Union in 1959.
