XD50254 1940s HOME MOVIE ERIE & LACKAWANA RAILROAD FAN TRIP BALTIMORE & OHIO STEAM LOCOMOTIVES

This fascinating 16mm home movie, from the Rowland family collection (and likely shot by Ivison D. Rowland, Sr. ), shows a fan trip on the Erie and Lackawana Railroad made in the late 1930s or early 1940s, originating in Hawley, Pennsylvania. Located in Wayne County, Hawley was the site of a large coaling station. The Erie locomotives shown are apparently #2732 (:58), #3048 (1:41), #4123 (2:20), and #2498 (2:41). At 1:26, the Pioneer Coach at Hawley, Pennsylvania is shown, originally part of the Pennsylvania Coal Company gravity railroad. At 1:44, a 1910 Model T Ford is shown at Hawley. At 2:44, huge coal piles are shown, probably at a mine. At 3:13, passengers disembark and walk across a high railroad trestle. At 3:48, the film shows Baltimore & Ohio Railroad historical locomotives including an American type #25 (3:56) “William Mason”, the “William Calloway” (4:00), the Tom Thumb (4:13), and others. At 5:00, B&O #462 and other locomotives are shown including #2437, #710, #1442, #5311 (5:30), the George Emerson (5:41) #5600, and a dockside type #98 (6:21). At 6:32 a huge brick roundhouse is shown. At 6:43 the film shows Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, and at (8:04) a boy and his dog and a house in the suburbs.

The #5600 locomotive shown in the film was the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad’s sole Class N-1 steam locomotive, and the first duplex locomotive and the first 4-4-4-4 locomotive ever built. It was designed and built by the railroad’s own shops in 1937 but retired in 1943 due to mechanical issues, and finally scrapped in 1950.
