XD5018 “HALLOWEEN” 1960S ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING FILM TRICK OR TREAT

This short film from 1966 is a scripted educational film that seeks to improve command of the English language for special needs students or students who do not speak English as a first language. Presented by United World Films, inc. as part of the Living Language series this film titled “Halowe’en” uses narration in simple language and subtitles to chronicle the story of elementary school-aged children enjoying the customs and traditions specific to Halloween. The film utilized the expertise of educational consultants of language arts education (ELA) specialists Judit Horvath and Sheila Lowenbraun and was produced and directed by Leonard Peck. It is worth mentioning that the executive producer for the project is John .D. Desmond and the project director is Harold M. Weiner.

Mary and her brothers discussing their costumes for trick or treating later (7:56). Mary’s father comes home carrying two pumpkins (8:22). Mary, her dad, and her siblings carve a jack-o-lantern (9:12). Illuminated jack-o-lantern in windowsill (12:25). Mary dressed as a witch and her brothers dressed as a skeleton and a pirate walking down their driveway in their costumes (12:30). Mary and her brothers pass other trick or treaters and knock on a door for some candy (13:37).
