Part of the “Journey” series of promotionals by Standard Oil Company, “Treasure From The Sea” is an early 1960s program about the Peruvian fishing industry, and how the oil industry has helped it develop. Opens with shot of whaling vessel utilizing harpoon cannon off the coast of Peru. (0:54). Shots of use of harpoon cannon being used on a Humpback whale, as well as subsequent shot of harvesting whale (1:49). Map of Peru, narrator explains Humboldt Current is responsible for regions rich marine life (2:00). Natural port of Chimbote is important for fishing industry. Peruvians have fished these waters since prehistoric times (2:10). Shots of clay bowl with fish motif, shot of Nasca Bowl (2:31). Comment on how sometimes motifs were decorative but frequently they were practical. Shot of Stirrup Spout Vessel in shape of fish (2:42). Narrator discusses how early Peruvians recognized the many types of fish in their waters. Shot of an ancient clay pot with several different types of fish (3:02). Occasionally ancient Peruvians depicted mythological creatures, clay vessel with fish demon, a killer whale or orca (3:16). Fish are converted to Fishmeal in long drying tunnels (11:20). Commentary on how fishmeal is used as cattle feed and fertilizer (11:23). Narrator notes that growth of industry result of initiative by Peruvian businessmen. Shots of yard full of sacks of presumably fishmeal (11:37). Discussion on how oil was necessary for growth of the Peruvian fishing industry. Shots of fishmeal loaded onto ship (11:58). Narrator explains that the Standard Oil Company’s affiliates built necessary infrastructure for oil shipments including bulk storage plant, dock facilities, and equipment for fueling from tankers offshore (12:05). Narrator concludes that willingness to Invest in Economic Development even when it involves Investment Risk, promotes Economic Progress and strengthens the Free World. Term likely used in reference to Western Bloc of the Cold War (12:20). Shots of ships M/S Reinholt Oslo and Greek cargo ship M/S Kalamata (12:44). Shot of Kalamata flying Greek flag (12:46).
