One of a series of short films produced in 1969 by Charles Grinker and Mert Koplin, “Which Way USA — Black Views on Race” provided brief portraits of many African American leaders including Martin Luther King, Cassius Clay, Malcolm X, Sidney Poitier, and others. This episode begins with an introduction of Rev. Ralph Abernathy by the Rev. Jesse Jackson, and then features portions of a fiery speech by Abernathy. This is a “report” by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, paying tribute to those who were at Birmingham and recounting some of the events of Bloody Sunday. Ralph David Abernathy Sr. (1926 – 1990) was an American civil rights activist and Baptist minister. He was a close friend and mentor of Martin Luther King Jr. He collaborated with King and E. D. Nixon to create the Montgomery Improvement Association, which led to the Montgomery bus boycott, and co-founded and was an executive board member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).
