XD47274 NASA APOLLO PROGRAM LUNAR TOPOGRAPHICAL SIMULATION AREA TV TEST FOOTAGE LEM MOCK-UP

This badly water damaged, silent film was shot at the Manned Space Flight Center (MSC) Lunar Topographical Simulation Area, most likely after 1965. It features TV footage shot from a moving vehicle, possibly a prototype lunar rover, at the LTSA. Simulated moon craters are visible in the footage, and a full scale mockup of the Apollo Lunar Excursion Module is occasionally visible (for example at 00:12 and 11:15) as well. It’s not exactly clear what this film was intended to demonstrate, but it was marked “Compatibility test with TV Monitor on Simulated Lunar Terrain.” The Lunar Topographical Simulation Area was a rocky area where various components of the Apollo program could be tested by engineers and astronauts. This included the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package, the LEM and apparently some kind of prototype lunar rover.
