XD47214 NASA NEUTRAL BUOYANCY TANK TEST MANIPULATION & RETRIEVAL OF SIMULATED TEST PACKAGE

This silent, slightly water damaged footage shows a NASA astronaut dexterity test performed in a neutral buoyancy tank. The tests appear to involve use of a tool (seen at 3:00) to remove a pin, or series of pins, holding a transparent case in place. Once the pins are removed, the test subject moves the case to the bottom of the tank. This type of test is typical of the Apollo era, where astronauts were expected to remove experimental packages from the base of the Lunar Module or LM. Tests would commonly begin with a series like the ones shown, using test subjects in scuba gear, before progressing to subjects in spacesuits. It’s not clear what package is shown here, but it might have been simulating one of the components of the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package (ALSEP), which were stored in the Lunar Module’s Scientific Equipment (SEQ) Bay in two separate subpackages.
