XD46414 “COME BACK” 1970s ANTI-DRUNK DRIVING SCARE FILM DRIVER’S ED DUI MOVIE

This brief and intense film “Come Back” shows the dangers of drinking and driving. It was made by Teleketics, a short-lived Catholic media production company. directed by Bruce Baker, written by William Whitehead and Bruce Baker, with cinematography by Andrew Janczak. It stars Linda Risk, Wanda Shannon, David Frankhan, Russel Arms, Jim Chandler, and others (full cast list at 10:53).

The film tells the story of how an intoxicated man hits and paralyzes a young girl after consuming alcohol with coworkers, and how he responds to the tragedy. The film opens with the horrific incident as the drunk driver veers around a large truck to avoid a stop light, and hits the girl as she moves thru a cross walk (:37). Police cars zoom onto the scene (:50). A flash back segment shows the driver drinking alcohol with coworkers (1:02) as they follow him with more booze as he slips into the driver’s seat. He places blame on the young girl by telling the police that she had come out of nowhere (1:11). The mother arrives on scene (1:38), the girl is set onto a stretcher (1:55) and the offending driver is pushed into the back of the police car (2:24). Upon visiting the hospital where the girl is receiving treatment, the driver learns from her angry parents that she had been paralyzed (3:27). The driver, named ‘Ray’, desperately tries to convince others he was not at fault showcasing a common effect of substance abuse, denial (5:04). At the auto shop (7:21) he again places blame elsewhere, this time pointing to the lack of signal on the corner. The dent from the accident is seen at (7:34). Ray visits a friend and inquires about sleeping pills as he cannot sleep even though the courts had cleared him of any legal fault (8:25). Ray returns to the hospital a third time and gets in to see the young girl who immediately recognizes him as the driver due to the guilt expressed on his face (9:23). After noticing the innocence and capacity for forgiveness from the young girl, Ray breaks down and admits his own guilt (9:42). The film closes as the parents arrive and agree to let the man return again to visit the girl (10:38). It was presented by TeleKetics which places the film sometime between 1969 and 1975 (10:56).
