This National Safety Council film takes a look at drug use specifically in the truck driving industry, where schedule demands and work pressures create conditions that can promote substance abuse. Truck drivers are stated to have a tendency to fall into substance abuse due to the pressures and inherent loneliness of the job. The NSC is a member-based organization founded in 1913 which promotes health and safety in the US. Tom Decker, Vice President of Corporate Relations of the NSC (:13) opens the scene. Employees circle around in a break room between shifts (:43). One man tells his coworker his concern over having his physical moved from a month away to a week away as he will not pass a urine test due to drug use (1:02). The National Safety Council logo appears (1:04). Two men sit on a small fishing boat (1:16) prior to the title screen appearing (1:26). One of the fishermen expresses concern over his friend whom has developed a drug habit and is at risk of losing his job (2:14). The scene cuts to night at a gas station with the man the fisherman’s concern is over (2:51). As he checks the tire pressure (3:13), his drug dealer approaches him and offers him speed as the truck driver appears to be ‘beat’ (3:35). The truck driver turns the dealer down (4:21). Back on the fishing boat, one of the men describes his own history with substances and how he began with doctor prescribed painkillers. These made him drowsy and this led to him adding uppers to the mix in order to stay productive on the job (4:50). Jack and his wife argue in the kitchen of their home as they struggle with finances (5:15). In the front yard of the house, the friend and fisherman to Jack calls him out on his drug use as they rake leaves together (7:07). Jack continues to deny he has a problem (7:46). The film turns to the 76-gas station where Jack meets his drug dealer in the bathroom (8:29) and purchases cocaine as he had now passed drug test. Afterwards, his driving appears erratic as the effects of the drug sink in (9:29). He nearly hits a vehicle and continues to riffle through his bag for more cocaine (10:02). After nearly hitting a man crossing the road (6:51) Jack steps from the truck, argues with the man and phones his friend whom had offered him help with his substance abuse (11:14). The film concludes (12:20) with special thanks to the Carrier Companies of Illinois as well as the symbol for Defensive Driving Course (12:25).
