XD45784 “ BERLIN THE CAPITAL OF THE GERMAN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC ” 1970s EAST GERMAN TRAVELOGUE FILM

This black-and-white 1970s propaganda travlogue film produced by a Moscow film studio shows footage and landmarks from East Germany, also known as the German Democratic Republic (GDR), a communist, Soviet-led country from its establishment in 1949 until German reunification in 1990, following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. The film, narrated in German, begins with views of the North German lowlands (0:25), followed by the intersection of the Spree and Havel rivers (0:39), and a panoramic aerial view of Berlin with the Berliner Fernsehturms TV Tower (0:52). Various landmarks are shown: the Brandenburg Gate (1:00), Unter den Linden Street (1:14), the domed roof of the German State Opera (1:28), the German city library (1:37), which Vladimir Lenin often visited. A plaque to Lenin outside the library (1:47). Humboldt University (1:51) and the University of Berlin, where Karl Marx studied. A memorial to fascism victims at Unter den Linden, where GDR soldiers stand guard (2:14). The Berlin Town Hall, where the GDR State Council met (2:30). The Haus des Lehrers (Teachers House) and Congress Hall (2:47); the Lenin monument (2:56); Karl Marx Avenue (Karl-Marx-Allee) (3:02); residential areas. A female crossing guard directs people riding scooters and cars in traffic. The city railway, the S-Bahn (3:54), and a sign for the Alexanderplatz subway station (4:01). The frieze and inside of the Teachers House and Congress Hall (4:22), which has a library. Construction workers ride an elevator to the top of the Berliner Fernsehturms TV tower (4:52). Lion cubs, pelicans, and polar bears at the Berlin Zoo (5:25). Museum Island (5:44), the National Gallery, and the Pergamon (5:49). The Altar of Pergamon at the Pergamon Museum (5:55). People fish, feed ducks, ride a boat, sail, and kayak on the Spree and Havel rivers (6:17). Industrial complexes outside Berlin (6:44); electronic industry workers in factories (7:04). The electronics, optical, and chemical industries were big in East Germany. A statue of a Soviet soldier carrying a child (7:38); the Soviet memorial in Treptow Park (7:48). The film says the Soviet army “opened up a peaceful, happy future for the German people.” Children and youth march at the 10th World Festival of Youth and Students, held in Berlin in 1973 (8:34). This event was organized by the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY) and the International Union of Students.
