Dating to 1970, this silent NASA footage shows zero gravity flight tests of various collection bags and vacuum systems for containing urine and fecal matter in space. The tests were conducted aboard a reduced gravity aircraft, probably NASA’s Convair C-131 Samaritan or possibly a KC-135 aircraft. In the footage, test subjects are in simulated weightless conditions. According to a card at the head of the film, these tests were performed between May 25th and April 10th at Wright-Patterson AFB, as part of a contract with Fairchild-Hiller’s Manned Space Systems. At :41, a simulated urine collection development test is shown, followed at 10:16 by the simulated fecal collection test. At 13:58, human testing is shown. At 18:23, the subject seals a plastic bag for future disposal. A second test with an alternate human subject follows. At 24:13, other parts of the test are shown, including use of wipes. At 26:25, a subject simulates vomiting into one of the collection bags (In this shot, the full interior fuselage of the test aircraft is visible.) At 26:48, a “contingency bag” is shown in use aboard the aircraft.
