XD45054e BULOVA ACCUTRON QUARTZ WRISTWATCHES 1979 TV COMMERCIALS

These 1979 TV commercials for Bulova promotes the Accutron Quartz, the “most accurate watch of today” — and the future. The science fiction style commercials feature a supercomputer that speaks like Siri. The Accutron brand name was first used in 1960 for Bulova’s pure quartz wristwatches, and used actively up until 2014. The “Accutron” watches used a 360 Hz tuning fork instead of a balance wheel as the timekeeping element. The fork was powered by a one-transistor electronic oscillator circuit, so the Accutron qualifies as the second “electronic watch”, following the Hamilton Electric released in 1957. The Accutron was guaranteed to be accurate to one minute per month, or two seconds per day, considerably better than mechanical watches of the era.
