XD42064 ROYAL CANADIAN NAVY WWII ANTI-SUBMARINE WARFARE TRAINING HMCS CARAQUET & SUBMARINE P553

This silent film shows Canadian Royal Navy activities during WWII, primarily anti-submarine warfare exercises. The film starts with footage aboard a warship with anti-aircraft guns clearly visible and crew milling on deck. This is HMCS Woodstock, a Royal Canadian Navy revised Flower-class corvette, K238, part of the WWII Mid-Ocean Escort Force (MOEF).

At :46 the HMCS Caraquet, a Bangor-class minesweeper which served in the Royal Canadian Navy is seen. At 1:18, a hedgehog anti-submarine weapon is seen on deck. At 2:14, a British submarine is seen close by. The hedgehog is fired. At 3:04 the submarine P553 is shown. (This was actually the old American boat USS S-21, which was transferred to the Royal Navy at New London on 14 September 1942. She remained in American waters, based at Halifax, Canada, as an anti-submarine warfare training boat.) P553 is seen again at close range at 4:19, possibly conducting a man overboard drill. At 4:59 the hedgehog is fired over the submarine. At 7:00 a lifeboat and the bridge of the training ship are shown. At 8:30, shots aboard the P553 of the deck gun and crew on deck. At 8:37, the K238 is shown, as viewed from P553. The film concludes with shots of crew of the submarine and other shots of the two vessels.
