Shot in March 20-26, 1948 by an unknown traveler, this home movie shows a road trip from New York to Boston and Maine via Niagara Falls. It includes wonderful footage of Times Square at night. The film starts with shots in Wheeling, West Virginia. At :38, a map of the Pennsylvania Turnpike is shown and at :45 the Laurel Hill Tunnel. This is one of three original tunnels on the Pennsylvania Turnpike which were eventually abandoned after two massive realignment projects. It was bored under the border between Westmoreland and Somerset counties. At 1:05, New York City is shown on the map, along with postcard art of the city. At 1:22, an ice rink is shown, possibly at Rockefeller Center. At 1:31 the Capitol Theater marquee is shown. This was a movie palace demolished in 1968 which was located at 1645 Broadway, just north of Times Square in New York City, across from the Winter Garden Theatre. At 1:36, the Harem dining and dance club, at 49th Street and Broadway. Desi Arnaz name appears on the marquee. At 1:44, a neon and incandescent sign for “Gentleman’s Agreement”, a 1947 film starring John Garfield. At 1:52, an animated neon sign for Gillette razor blades. At 1:54, a Pepsi Cola sign, at 1:55 a sign for Ruppert, at 1:57 a sign for the Warner Movie Theater showing the 1938 film “Robin Hood” starring Errol Flynn. At 2:02 a sign for Planter’s Peanuts, at 2:07 an animated sign for Schaefer’s beer and at 2:17 for Nescafe. A wider shot of Times Square is at 2:24 followed by a shot of an ad for Camel cigarettes at 2:26. At 2:29, the Simon Ackerman Clothing Store, located in Times Square. At 2:31 a Budweiser sign. At 2:35 Boston is shown on the map. At 2:39 the empty Fenway Park is shown. At 2:51 the Harvard Stadium is shown and at 3:03 the Bunker Hill Monument. At 3:09 the USS Constitution is shown at anchor. At 3:21 the North Church. At 3:28 driving shots from the back seat show the driver and steering wheel. At 3:45 a card for the Maine Coast, and at 3:49 a sign for the Maine Turnpike and U.S. 1. At 4:17 are shots at Niagara Falls.
