This television commercial for Mott’s Clamato dates to the early 1980s. While the commercial states that the drink is made from tomatoes and clam juice, it is actually made from reconstituted tomato juice concentrate and sugar, which is flavored with spices, dried clam broth and MSG. The juice dates to as early as 1935 when Clamato Corporation of New York produced “clam and tomato juice in combination”. Clamato was produced in its current form beginning in 1966 by the Duffy-Mott Co., by Francis Luskey and another employee who wanted to create a Manhattan clam chowder style cocktail.
