XD35284 “ FOOD AND DRUGS ” 1965 CONSUMER COST SAVING SUPERMARKET TIPS & DRUG AND MEDICINE SAFETY

This 1965 color film, funded by the University of South Carolina College of General Studies, offers thrifty tips for scrimping and saving at the grocery store, demonstrating how to stretch a dollar at a mid-60s supermarket. Next, animation and dramatizations highlight the importance of prescription drug and over-the-counter medicine safety (TRT: 11:15).

The shot of vegetables turns away to an array of over-the-counter medicines and remedies (7:00). A pharmacist uses a mortar and pestle to mix medicine. A bottle is filled with blue liquid and placed atop a pharmacy counter (7:20). An animated cartoon illustration of a bald, overweight, white American man. He resists taking a tonic, an “Rx” prescription form. Narration: “Don’t take chances with your health by taking medicine prescribed to someone else.” This advice angers the man (7:54). The blue bottle from the pharmacist cures him instantly (8:43). A child’s hand counts out colorful orange pills from a bottle. A young boy lays on the floor with the orange pills spilled at his side (9:23). A sign: “Emergency.” An ambulance. Tombstones in a cemetery. A locked cabinet. Leftover medicine iis poured down a drain (9:55). A review of previous scenes (10:36).
