XD31581 “AROUND THE WORLD” 1953 ARABIC LANGUAGE NEWSREEL QUEEN ELIZABETH VISITS ST. PAUL’

This newsreel in Arabic is title “Around The World” and dates to 1953. It was shown in theaters in Cairo, Egypt and elsewhere. The film begins with voice-over stating “Around the world for the Arabic world”. It focuses primarily on Queen Elizabeth and the annual Epsom Downs horse race.

00:00:20 – 00:00:37 Title card “Her Royal Highness the Queen Visits St. Paul’s Cathedral” (Voice-over) Her Royal Highness the Queen visits St. Paul’s Cathedral where she met with Sir Winston Churchill and ministers of the Commonwealth.

00:00:37 – 00:00:47 (Voice-over) Joining them is Princess Alice of Greece the mother of the Duke of Edinburgh to join the prayer according to her religious rituals.

00:00:47 – 00:01:05 (Voice-over) And under the flowers that adorn the historic city, the royal car arrives in its parade carrying the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh

00:01:05 – 00:01:28 (Voice-over) And then begins the celebration with a tradition that goes back to the reign of the Tudors. This is the welcoming by the Mayor of London to her Royal Highness the Queen. The Mayor of London leads the entourage to the steps of the Church carrying a sword studded with jewels.

00:01:28 – 00:01:43 (Voice-over) After that, the queen enters the Church where she is received by the Archbishop of London and the Archbishop of Canterbury along with the Queen mother and Princess Margaret.

00:01:53 – 00:02:00 (Voice-over) And as the heads of the institutions rose for the Queen during her coronation, they rise to her again out of gratitude.

00:02:14 – 00:02:18 Title card “The Derby Race”

00:02:40 – 00:02:47 (Voice-over) Joining the massed spectators are visitors from the commonwealth adorned in their finest dress in celebration of the crowning of the new queen.

00:02:55 – 00:03:08 (Voice-over) The royal procession now arrives carrying the youthful queen and her husband the duke who came for recreation and rest from their exhausting duties to the nation.

00:03:46 – 00:03:50 (Voice-over) The arrival of the queen adorns the 174th Derby race.

00:03:53 – 00:03:58 (Voice-over) Receiving the queen are the official organizers of the race.

00:04:12 – 00:04:25 (Voice-over) The queen is escorted by Earl Rodbury?? to the horse stable to see her horse “Aureole”. Following the queen is her mother and princess Margaret to see their hope in the race.

00:04:30 – 00:04:36 (Voice-over) In the stable, the horses are displayed and are fully ready to race.

00:04:49 – 00:05:10 (Voice-over) Aureole receives admiration from the viewers for on him rest the hopes of the spectators. Aureole is the offspring of the late king’s horses. And now starts the story of the hero jockey who we see now his horse “Pinza” who he will ride. Here is the hero Sir Gordon Richards.

00:5:22 – 00:05:31 (Voice-over) It is the 1953 Derby race which is held at the Epsom Downs track which is crowded with half a million viewers.

00:5:34 – 00:05:44 (Voice-over) Among the notables in attendance is the crown prince of Japan prince Akihito who represented his father at the crowning ceremony. And here is Aureole prancing to the starting gate.

00:5:50 – 00:05:58 (Voice-over) Getting ready now are 27 of the finest thoroughbred horses who will race on this green ground which was prepared by nature.

00:6:10 – 00:06:23 (Voice-over) The first half is very tiring since it is up hill. In the lead are five horses among them the Agha Khan’s horse. No advance so far for Aureole or Pinza.

00:6:37 – 00:07:25 (Voice-over) At the first turn, the Agha Khan’s horse is in the lead but no, Pinza number 23 the hero’s horse achieves some progress. The Agha Khan’s horse is still in the lead followed by Pinza. Only a half mile remains for the race. Watch him now as he runs down hill with Pinza closing the gap. With only a short distance remaining watch Pinza on the outside as he passes the lead horse and moves to the inside track.

00:07:39 – 00:08:21 (Voice-over) And now the royal horse Aureole is starting to be competitive as he passes the Agha Khan’s horse. But, the race is won by Gordon Richards who was given the title “Sir” by the Queen. And now to the Royal Box where her Royal Highness recognizes this great victory won by this hero jockey in the derby for the first time after 28 tries. It is also the first time for Sir Victor Sassoon and the trainer Norman Bertie to win this race.
