This raw footage from WWII shows operations of U.S. Navy submarines in the Pacific, including images of boats on lifeguard duty during the American air bombardment of Japan. The film begins with shots of sampan or similar Japanese fishing vessels being strafed and sunk by the deck gun of a submarine. At 1:03 what appears to be an enemy survivor is brought on board the deck. At 1:30, a shirtless, bearded officer with a pipe in his mouth surveys the scene from the top of the conning tower. Another Japanese man, clinging to a piece of floating wreckage, is rescued at 2:03. At 2:29, an American airman is rescued from the water. At 2:30, a large number of crew of the submarine is on deck, scanning for survivors. The small Japanese flags blowing in the breeze denote ships sunk by the sub. At 3;08, a submarine tender is shown.
