This 1967 color installment of an ABC News magazine program for young people hosted by Bill Owen and Virginia Gibson offers an educational look at the American Revolution and the drafting of the United States Constitution, with Gibson appearing in period costume as Sarah “Sally” Franklin Bache (TRT: 20:37).

Revolutionary War-era engravings and illustrations in montage (2:55). Gibson appears in a new costume, wearing an apron while she removes peas from pods, seated on a park bench next to a picnic basket (3:49). Bill Owen appears at a desk, reading a facsimile edition of the U.S. Constitution by candlelight (4:42). Portraits of Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, Robert Morris, James Madison, James Wilson, John Dickinson, Gouverneur Morris, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and George Washington (5:14). Virginia Gibson returns, again in character (11:51). The issue of slavery is addressed, with illustrations of enslaved people and slaveholders in montage. Narration mentions the Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves and the Three-fifths Compromise (12:29). Bill Owen exits an assembly room and leans on a pillar (14:01). A colonial servant sets a dining room table. Gibson appears in a blonde wig. The servant in a colonial bonnet lights candles (14:25). A montage of portraits of General Washington (15:29). Owen introduces the chair that George Washington sat in during the Constitutional Convention. Zoom in on a wood carving of the sun on the head of the chair’s back (16:23). Gibson sits in a rocking chair near a porcelain sculpture. She reads a portion of a speech by Benjamin Franklin. She looks forward to dinner (16:46). Our hosts return, Virginia Gibson now appearing as her normal self. They review the Bill of Rights (18:29). End credits (19:59).

This somewhat atypical episode of Discovery ‘67 was produced by Jules Power and Daniel Wilson, written by Mary Dornheim, directed by Jack Ofield, and edited by Stuart Grant for ABC News and Public Affairs in cooperation with the National Park Service.

The Independence Hall is the historic building where both the United States Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were originally debated and eventually adopted. It is now the focal point of the Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
