XD30782 ” ELEPHANTS IN THE TEAK FOREST ” DISCOVERY ’67 TV SHOW LAMPANG NORTHERN THAILAND UNICEF

Produced in 1967, this episode of the long-running children’s television show “Discovery” focuses on the Asian elephants of Thailand. It features hosts Bill Owen and Virginia Gibson, who begin the episode by re-capping a previous episode which showed a visit to a family in Southern Thailand. At 1:55 host Bill Owen talks about how they are now in Northern Thailand. At 2:04 they are in the province of Lampang and they will be telling the story of two young families in Northern Thailand. The first family lives in a house between the town of Lampang and the village of Mungo. At 2:23 Virginia Gibson starts talking about how Northern Thailand is very different from Southern Thailand. “Here the people do not depend on rice, fruit, or vegetables,” says Virginia Gibson. In Northern Thailand, the huge teak trees and Asian elephants are crucial in the lives of the people that live there. The asian elephants are very common in Northern Thailand and are used to carry items that are needed. The first family we meet at 3:00 has been married for a year and their names are Neret and Urai. They live at the house earlier shown with their two month old baby Taperot. The other family actually lives in the teak forest at a lumber camp (3:32). We meet Moon, Mau, and their two and a half year old daughter. Moon lives in a lumber camp and can only be visited by his family for two days at a time. Then, Bill Owen goes on to talk about how a global organization helped Thailand a ton (3:56). Virginia Gibson then talks about this organization UNICEF(United Nations Children’s Fund). There is a small UNICEF health center in the village, and it works to help the children and see if the water is ok to drink. At 5:10, Bill Owen talks about how the elephants help out, while an elephant is working on screen. The wood of the teak forest is used around the world to make furniture and other things. At 6:40 Neret and Moon’s work is shown. Neret drives a tractor, and Moon has to track down his asian elephant and get it to work in the teak forest. Asian elephants are only found in Asia and are different from african elephants. At 16:20, Urai’s work is shown, her job is to get water from the community well. At 18:00 Urai boards a bus that goes to the clinic, the only place where parents and children can get check ups. At 20:44 the show ends.
